Blue Monday

The concept isn’t rooted in science (it was actually from a press release encouraging people to book their summer holidays!) but the feelings behind it are very real, especially for business owners.

For many of us it’s where reality catches up after Christmas because:
Tax bills arrive – Self Assessment payments, corporation tax planning, VAT following the festive period.
Cash flow tightens – December spending, slower trading, late-paying customers.
Motivation dips – Short days, poor weather, and the mental comedown after pushing hard to finish the year.
Responsibility weighs heavier – You’re not just thinking about yourself, but staff, suppliers, customers and the future of the business.

January doesn’t need a complete business overhaul. Small, focused actions are often far more effective and achievable.

1. Narrow the timeframe
Don’t worry about the whole year. Look at the next 60–90 days.
What cash is coming in? What’s going out? What decisions actually need to be made now?
2. Talk earlier, not later
Tax and cash flow issues are usually solvable, especially when addressed early. A short conversation with your accountant can remove weeks of worry.
3. Break problems into actions
A £20,000 worry feels overwhelming. A payment plan, forecast or funding option feels manageable.
Progress reduces pressure.
4. Separate self-worth from performance
A quiet January, a tough quarter or an unexpected bill does not define you or your business.
Remember, every successful business owner has been here at some point
If January is feeling heavy, financially, mentally, or both, you don’t have to carry it alone. Often, clarity and support lift far more weight than people expect
