It’s something we’re really proud of, particularly because our relationship with FreeAgent has grown significantly over the last 12 months. What started with helping clients discover a different approach to their accounting software has developed into a strong relationship with the FreeAgent team and one that we’re excited to continue building.
Saving clients money without compromising on functionality
One of the biggest benefits we’ve seen from the Mettle bank and FreeAgent relationship is the opportunity to help our clients find a bookkeeping and accounting solution that works for them without paying for features they don’t need.
Over the past year, we’ve helped a number of clients move across to FreeAgent, with some seeing software savings of up to £600 a year.

FreeAgent and Making Tax Digital
Of course, one of the biggest reasons we’re excited about FreeAgent is its approach to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD IT).
MTD is now becoming a reality for many sole traders and landlords, with the first phase having started from April 2026 and further thresholds being introduced in the coming years.
FreeAgent is an HMRC-recognised MTD solution and allows businesses to maintain their digital records, prepare quarterly updates and submit information directly to HMRC.
This is particularly important to us at JP Blackmoor because MTD isn’t simply a software problem.
It’s an accounting, tax and business-change problem.
Getting the software right is one piece of the puzzle. Understanding what needs to be recorded, when information needs to be submitted, what the figures actually mean and how MTD fits into the wider tax picture is where having the right accountant really matters.

We’re also delighted that our relationship with FreeAgent has gone beyond simply recommending the software to our clients.
We’re particularly proud that Tom has been involved in FreeAgent’s in-person advisor talks and panel discussions, as well as delivering webinars alongside FreeAgent to help educate other accountants and advisors about the rules surrounding Making Tax Digital.

What makes FreeAgent so useful?
So, what is it about FreeAgent that makes us recommend it to clients?
There’s quite a lot to like.
Invoicing and getting paid
FreeAgent allows businesses to create and send professional invoices, track what’s been paid and send payment reminders. It can also integrate with online payment solutions to make it easier for customers to pay.
Bank feeds and automated bookkeeping
Bank accounts can be connected directly to FreeAgent so transactions can be imported automatically, reducing manual data entry.
FreeAgent also has its Guess functionality, which can suggest how transactions should be categorised based on previous activity.
For a busy small business owner, that can make keeping the books up to date considerably easier.
Managing your accounts on the go
The FreeAgent mobile app allows business owners to keep on top of their accounts wherever they are.
You can check your finances, manage expenses, capture receipts, create and track invoices and even manage MTD submissions from your mobile device.
VAT and tax
FreeAgent can also help with VAT, Self Assessment and Making Tax Digital, with the ability to submit supported returns and information directly to HMRC.
For MTD for Income Tax specifically, FreeAgent can use the information already recorded in the software to populate quarterly updates, reducing the amount of additional work required when it comes to submitting them.
Understanding your numbers
It isn’t just about recording transactions.
FreeAgent provides financial reports including Profit & Loss information and cashflow insights, helping business owners understand what is actually happening in their business. It also includes personalised insights through its Radar functionality.
